Life on the Hulks

Our reading this week focusses on prison hulks that were used to house convicts who had been sentenced to transportation in England in the 18th century.

Hulks

Reflecting on what we have read together, think about the following questions and leave your responses as a comment.

  • What is one thing the words tell you?

  • What are two things the pictures tell you?

  • What are three things the pictures and words make you wonder?

  1. 1. It was horrible, dirty and had rats. It had leaks and the prisoners were stuck unless they were told to go to Australia or America

    2.
. The hulks (old ships) were nearly just pieces of wood.
. The diseases were very easy to catch, and the English wouldn’t help if you were sick

    3.
. I wondered if they would try and break out of the hulks
. How much money would they get In a day when working in America?
. Would the prisoners get mail from family while in the hulks and in Australia and America?

  2. What is one thing the words tell you?
Max: how hard it is to move a boat to the shore

What are two things the pictures tell you?
Wilson: they did a great job but like the first thing max said it was hard to move it so they will crash.

What are three things the pictures and words make you wonder?
Max and Wilson: how to build a boat that big.
How they worked 12 hours a day!
How they must of crashed a few times on the shore.

  3. That the hulks survived 80 years, they tell me that how horrible it was being on there and could die, how ungrateful they were that they are on the ship because they committed a crime even children.

  4. The words tell me that the hulks were rather large ships. But they were infected with disease and lice and rats. If someone had a disease it would spread through the entire ship. The children were even kept in the same room. On the hulks 1/3 of people would die.

The picture tells me that the hulks were not very nice things to live in. Parts of them were broken and it looks cold and miserable. It also looks like the boats rocked side to side a lot because the boat in the photo dose not look very sturdy.

I wonder if people even got off the ships or how long they were on the ships for. It would be like torcher to be on a ship like that.

  5. What is one thing the words tell you?
The hulks were not enjoyable and were very dirty and disgusting. The Hulks also had many Rats and diseases.

What are two things the pictures tell you?
The Hawks were a bit of a wreck and the Hawks were near very wavy seas The Hawks were a bit of a wreck and the Hawks were near very wavy seas

What is one things the pictures and words
    make you wonder?
The words and pictures make me wonder how many staff we are on the Hulks or if there were no staff.

  6. What is one thing the words tell you?
-The words told me that life on the hulks were full of viruses and diseases and how they spread quickly.

What are two things the pictures tell you?
-The pictures told me that life on the hulks was disgusting and ugly.
-It also told me that the hulks were full of rats, sewage and virus bacteria.

What are three things the pictures and words make you wonder?
-How long were the prisoners on the hulks there for?
    -why kids as well?
-Why were they treated so badly?

  7. The words tell me that life living on the hulks was miserable and horrid. Children were treated the same ways as adults and that no one wanted to live in the hulks.

The pictures tell me that children that got sick, weren’t protected to keep the disease. The disease was going to just flow around.

The words make me wonder about why people believed that children and adults were treated the same and the pictures prove it.

  8. The words tell me that when someone did a crime they were on hulks for 7 years. The pitchers tell me hulks are massive and disgusting. Why did kids do crimes, what was it like on hulks, what was the longest time on hulks.

  9. The words tell me just how hard and discussing there life was then and why they wanted to leave and be free kids instead of doing chores and being in prison it was hard and annoying for them. How bad the Hulks were and why they were so bad the picture showed a practically sunken ship and one where they were sick is just showing how fast viruses spread and that you need to isolate when you have one. On the ship I wonder what did the stuff look like on the inside? The words of them talking about wearing chains why did they need them and what were they for. Finally the one of the virus how did it start was it food or a cough? Yours sincerely Tahlia!

  10. What is one thing the words tell you?
The words tell me that the hulks where horrid they were dirty and disgusting
What are two things the pictures tell you?
No one liked it. Most people caught a disease and most died
What are three things the pictures and words make you wonder? Why were they there. What crime did they do to be sent to the hulks. What food did they eat

  11. The ships were disgusting and had rats, larks and terrible diseases.

The boats look like a ragged piece of wood and they don’t look awfully stables

I wonder how long people were on these ships
I wonder what we’re the most common diseases on the hulks

  12. One thing the words told me is that the hulks, overall were unsanitary, crowded and miserable. I don’t think I’d last a day on them. I can’t imagine what 14 years on there would be like!

Two things the pictures told me were the conditions on the hulks were terrible and the they were REALLY unlucky to be on there. The smell, the crowdedness. Terrible!

3 things that the words and picture told me were that
    1. The hulks are the one of the harshest punishments ever(in my opinion)
    2. People were put in such terrible conditions they died
    3. When they got off they would be overjoyed to not smell sewage everyday.

  13. The words told me the carelessness and the unjustified hulks. The nonexistent hygiene killed many prisoners, but the government didn’t care. The government only cared that they had money, money and more money. They didn’t buy food, water or even warm clothes, but why? Because they didn’t care at all.

The pictures tell me of sad, unhealthy prisoners, sent to the most unhealthy places, the sewers. They were literally living in the sewers on boats. They were being slowly destroyed by lice, mice and diseases. It is obvious how pretty much 1/3 of the prisoners died of disease alone. Imagine every reason the died? That is an sorry number. The pictures showed hygiene not being in use, people slowly being destroyed and dying. They were cruelly treated, and kids as well. Children had to commit crimes, it was the only chance of survival. They needed money, even if they had to steal. Even 5 cents was a blessing from above.

The pictures and words showed me a summary of what I have said. I thank you for reading this long comment and see you later at Kookoo Kabeer’s Krazy Blog!

  14. The words tell me that living on the hulks was terrible. Children got treated like adults on the hulks. These pictures tell me that no one was protected from disease and germs. The words make me question if kids could commit crimes that are so bad that they deserved to go on the hulks.

  15. It was dirty, gross and looked bashed up. The poor prisoners where stuck there for ages in a leaking bashed you rickety boat

The hulks are basically floating pieces of junk. Many people died on them from diseases and beefing treated badly

Where did the people who worked there rest?
    Did anyone escape?
    How many people survived?
    How many people died?

  16. The picture of the hulk shows me that it was a horrid place for ppl to stay/be at, its very dangerous (well that’s what I think.)

I don’t really know why kids would be treated like adults when they do crimes or do something wrong.

Questions- How big is a hulk? Why did criminals have to go on a hulk? How is it like to be in a hulk? Do people still go on hulks now?!

    (The last question was weird/intresting)

  17. The words tell me about convicts. The pictures tell me about the hulks and the material the boat is made out of. The words and pictures make me wonder what crimes they did, do they receive stuff from there family’s and what diseases did they catch.
